Sad day for sprint car racing! Even worse for a life long fan! LONG LIVE THE KING!!! It's been one wild ride that's for sure! Thanks for the memories Steve Kinser

I thought Kinser retired last year and now he's announcing his retirement again.  Also thought Swindell retired last year and I'd guess he's driven in more races this year at this time than he did last year at this time.  Yeah, retirement.  The Brett Favres of the sprint car world.

Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

Sammy has done the Favre thing but Steve didn't. He never said he was retiring from driving althogether, just that he was retiring from full time WoO competition. Hell even last night he said that Lebanon Valley would "most likely" be his last race so he didn't close that door completely.

Thankfully for all of us it's in their blood.  I think if Kinser would dedicate himself to getting in shape this off-season, maybe hire a personal trainer, he'd find the grind part of fulltime or even most-of-the-time racing obtainable again.  I think we all know what he can still do on any given night.

Sammy didn't do the "Favre" thing at all. He said last year he was done racing fulltime. No more 100 race schedules and the hectic traveling. His schedule for this year is about 50 races, which is what he wanted. Still racing (and winning) but still plenty of down time.  Wouldn't surprise me if he does the part time thing for a few more years. At least I hope he does. So I have to laugh when all the so called "informed" sprint car fans come on here and say "wait, didn't he retire?".

Funny thing between Steve, Sammy and Favre?  And only one of them looks like they are 70 years old----Favre!!!!

Kinda, sorta did.  I think you're probably right in your opinion but those that go with "he retired" are probably right too.  Here's his quote when he announced retirement (abruptly) in 2014:

"After the last two weeks of our break from racing I have decided to retire from racing. I would like to still drive my midget at the Chili Bowl. I have been thinking a lot about this for the last three months. It has been a hard decision to make. I always knew when the time came to retire it would be clear. I've had a long and very successful career. Part of the reason for the timing now is I've spent the last two weekends with my son, Kevin, racing. I haven't had any time to spend with his racing the last four years. He will drive a (NASCAR) Nationwide car for the rest of the year and I want to be there to support him. I was going to do a limited schedule next year or retire at the end of this year. I've had a long talk with (Big Game Treestands Founder) Tod Quiring and we both agreed that this is the best for me.

"Amy and I would like to thank Tod and everyone at Big Game Treestands for the last four seasons. We would also like to thank everyone who has helped or been a part of my career, my fans and the friends that I have met over the last 43 years."

Again, I can see how people would react to the statement as "he retired," but I get where you're coming from too (especially since I'm guessing you're a fan).  I think when Steve and the WoO did his "farewell tour" it was always stated that he was retiring from fulltime racing with WoO.  Sammy's announcement above reads as being more perminent then what Steve and the WoO did in 2014.

Please don't use facts or actual quotes when dealing with Sammy fans.   It will only confuse them.    #stillwhining

racing is like an addiction.  Most addicts fail on first attempt to quit.  Some take numerous times.

Yep...and what about the longevity of this rivalry - darn near 40 years - nothing comes close, does it?

They said at the track that Swindell & Danny Smith, who both raced Monday nite, were also there for the very 1st Outlaw show at Lebanon Valley, in 1981. Thats 35 years ago...

When did WoO start? 1976? That would be 40, & they may have competed against each other before that....

1978, Kinser won 1st WoO race at Devil's Bowl in Tejas. I guess Sammy wasn't there, cause he won the first 2 races he entered, later that year

Maybe they raced vs. each other before, anyone know?
