USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

BRODY ROA IS BACK ON TOP AT HANFORD
By Lance Jennings

JUNE 29, 2016... After winning the previous week at Santa Maria, Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California) scored last Saturday’s victory at Hanford’s Keller Auto Speedway at Kings Fairgrounds. Battling back and forth with Jace Vander Weerd, Roa earned the $1,500 USAC West Coast Sprint Car triumph. Vander Weerd, Richard Vander Weerd, Hard Charger “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., and Kyle Smith rounded out the top-five drivers.

Staring sixth, Brody Roa nearly swept the program by earning the night’s Woodland Auto Display Award and running second to “Shifter” Landon Hurst in his heat race. Racing the BR Performance owned #91R HD Industries / Lee & Norma Leonard Maxim, Roa took the lead for good on lap twenty-seven and sailed to his third career series win. The defending 360 Western World Champion left Hanford with a 52-point lead on the strength of two feature wins, three Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one heat race victory, seven top-10 finishes, and 39 feature laps led.

Jace Vander Weerd (Visalia, California) dominated the main event but had to settle for second at Hanford. Piloting the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Jace qualified eleventh out of nineteen racers and ran second to Tristan Guardino in his heat race. The former USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year started fifth in the main event and led the first eleven laps before Roa took control. Vander Weerd managed to regain the top spot from Roa on lap sixteen, but Brody succeeded with a late race pass to take the checkered flags. Heading to Tulare on July 22nd, Vander Weerd sits third in points with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, two heat race victories, one Keizer Aluminum Wheels / Competition Suspension Inc. Semi-Main win, five top-10 finishes, and 50 feature laps led to his credit.

Richard Vander Weerd (Visalia, California) raced from tenth to score fourth in the 30-lap main event. Driving the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard was thirteenth quick in time trials and placed fourth in his heat race. To date, the 2011 Champion ranks fifth in the standings with one feature win, one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, one BR Motorsports / King Racing Products Hard Charger Award, five top-10 finishes, and 3 feature laps led on the year.

“Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. (Tipton, California) earned his second BR Motorsports / King Racing Products “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fourth place run from seventeenth. Racing his #17V Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / SurfNSprint Spike, Faria qualified second overall and scored sixth in his heat race after suffering mechanical problems. The two-time champion left the Kings County Fairgrounds ranked ninth in points with one heat race victory and four top-10 finishes on the season.

Kyle Smith (Moorpark, California) stormed from thirteenth to finish fifth in the Hanford main event. Piloting the family owned #55 California RV Service / Roy’s Towing Spike, Smith was tenth fast in time trials and placed fifth in his heat race. The two-time VRA Sprint Car Champion heads to Tulare sitting thirteenth in the point chase with one BR Motorsports / King Racing Products Hard Charger Award and three top-10 finishes.

“Shifter” Landon Hurst (Riverdale, California) raced to victory in the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving Steve Watt’s #81X Maxwell Industries / Steve Watt Enterprises CS9, Hurst qualified seventh overall and scored eighth in the main event. In limited starts, the former Rookie of the Year is seventeenth in the point standings with one BR Motorsports / King Racing Products Hard Charger Award and two top-10 finishes to his credit.

Tristan Guardino (Fremont, California) claimed the checkered flags for the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Racing the family owned #15T Dorso’s Automotive / Grant & Dan’s Transmission Maxim, Guardino was eighth fast in time trials and scored ninth in the feature. Ranked seventh in points, Tristan has posted two heat race victories, six top-10 finishes, and nine feature laps led in the campaign.

Shannon McQueen (Bakersfield, California) raced to her first heat race victory of the year in the Brown & Miller Racing Solutions event. Piloting Bob & Toni Van Meter’s #7 Simpson Race Products / Lucas Oil Spike, McQueen qualified ninth overall and claimed eleventh in the Hanford main event. The former USAC Western States Midget Champion heads to the “Peter Murphy Classic” ranked fifteenth in the point standings.

The USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will take a break in the schedule before returning to action at Tulare’s Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway on July 22nd & 23rd.
