FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
USAC Western States Midget Series

RONNIE GARDNER IS BACK ON TOP AT BAKERSFIELD
By Lance Jennings

MAY 2, 2016... Taking advantage of Michael Faccinto’s contact with a lapped car, Ronnie Gardner (Corona, California) led the final three laps to claim Saturday’s main event at Bakersfield Speedway. For Gardner, it was his second USAC Western States Midget victory of the campaign and the fifteenth of his career. Fast qualifier Faccinto, “The Panda Express” Terry Nichols, Alex Schutte, and hard charger Tyler Dolacki chased the three-time champion to the checkered flags.

Racing the Six8 Motorsports’ #68 Baldozier Racing / Esslinger Engineering Stewart, Ronnie Gardner qualified second out of twenty-five racers and won the night’s DJ Safety Heat Race #2. After starting fifth in the feature, Ronnie has moved to ninth in series wins and left Bakersfield with an 18-point advantage.

After starting third and leading the first twenty-seven laps, Michael Faccinto (Hanford, California) had to settle for second at Bakersfield. Piloting the MF Motorsports’ #35F OZV / Lucas Oil Spike, Faccinto held off “The Hawk” Darren Hagen early in the race and held the top spot until Gardner slipped by. Earlier in the program, Michael earned his first Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and ran second to Sean Dodenhoff in his heat race. Heading to Ventura on May 21st, Faccinto is second in the chase for the championship.

“The Panda Express” Terry Nichols (Delano, California) had one of his best nights with a third place finish from eighth. Driving his #1P Johasee Rebar / Neverlift Motorsports Spike, Nichols was seventeenth quick in time trials and scored third in his heat race. The 2009 West Coast Sprint Car Rookie of the Year has climbed to fifth in the point standings.

Alex Schutte (Redding, California) scored fourth in the Bakersfield 30-lap main event. Racing the Schutte/McElwee owned #28 Proficio / Aircraft Electrical Components Spike, Schutte qualified ninth overall and ran second to Darren Hagen in his heat race. The 2010 Champion left “The West’s fastest 1/3-mile oval” sitting eleventh in the point chase.

Tyler Dolacki (Fresno, California) earned his second Keizer Aluminum Wheels / Rod End Supply “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fifth place run from fourteenth. Piloting the family owned #18 Cite Clean / Ultimate Oil Cleanup Beast, Dolacki was eighth fast in time trials and scored fifth in his heat race. Entering the third point race, the young driver ranks sixth in the championship points.

Sean Dodenhoff (Bakersfield, California) raced to victory in the night’s 8-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving his #9D Lightning Medical Pro / Torco Oil Spike, Dodenhoff qualified tenth overall and placed seventh in the main event. Sean left his hometown track sitting third in the USAC Western Midget standings.

Making his first start in Keith Ford’s #73X Berry Pack / Walker Filtration Systems TCR, “The Hawk” Darren Hagen (Riverside, California) won the Brown & Miller Racing Solutions Heat Race #3. The 2012 USAC National Midget Champion was third quick in time trials and scored nineteenth after an early tangle knocked him out of contention. Hagen is currently twenty-sixth in the championship point chase.

With twenty-five cars on hand, Frankie Guerrini (San Rafael, California) claimed the 10-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main. Driving the family owned #63 F&F Racing / Davis Motorsports Spike, Guerrini qualified fourteenth overall, ran sixth in his heat race, and charged to ninth in the feature from sixteenth. Last year’s BCRA Midget Champion left Bakersfield Speedway ranked eighth in USAC Western Midget points.

On Saturday, May 21st, the USAC Western States Midget Series will return to action at Ventura Raceway. Located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 West Harbor Blvd. in Ventura, California, the date will also showcase Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets, and Go-Karts.
