Martens Holds Wood for Sprint Series of Oklahoma Victory!

Meeker, Oklahoma – April 23, 2016 - Jake Martens took the lead at the start and then held off a hard-charging Joe Wood, Jr. to claim his first Sprint Series of Oklahoma IMCA Racesaver sprint victory of the season as the tour made their first ever appearance at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma on Saturday night.

After a redraw of the first four rows for starting positions, Martens started on the pole for the twenty lap feature while Loyd Clevenger was slated to start along-side. However, mechanical gremlins forced Clevenger to start at the tail of the nineteen car field moving Andy Shouse to the outside, front row position.

Martens got the lead at the start and quickly jumped out front as Shouse and fourth starting Sterling Huff battled for the runner up position. While both drivers were battling for second, Martens opened a half stretch advantage before reaching slower cars on lap seven.

Fifth starting Joe Wood, Jr. had worked his way past Shouse for third on lap five and on lap eight passed Huff for the runner-up position.

At the races midway point, it was still Martens with a sizeable lead, followed by Wood, Huff, Shouse and seventh starting Blake Dacus.

On lap twelve the first and only caution of the feature finale fell when Brandon Long came to a stop at the top of turns three and four.

On the final restart Martens, aboard the Paul Martens owned, Martens Machine Shop/Fortune Auto and Truck Supply sponsored #48, got the jump on Wood and opened a five car length lead.

Martens approached slower cars on lap eighteen allowing Wood to cut his deficit down to three car lengths. Heading down the backstretch on the final lap, Wood got a run on Martens coming out of turn four but the Fairview, Oklahoma driver would hold on to take the two car length victory.

Shouse would settled for third while Huff and tenth starting Chris Kelly rounded out the top five.

The three, eight lap heat races for the nineteen car field were won by Martens, Huff and Shayla Waddell.

Next up for the Sprint Series will be Friday night, May 20, at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Oklahoma for their second appearance of the season as part of the tracks “Fast 5 Friday” series.
